Understanding the Domain Name System (DNS)
Computers speak to each other over the Internet, by using the numeric value e.g. 15.236.587.656 as the identifier, whilst human beings find it far easier to remember the alternative domain name (e.g. www.maru.africa).
These numbers are then synchronised with unique user-defined names, via appointed authoritative Registries. These registries ensure the regulations are adhered to globally. ZACR / UniForum (South Africa) is responsible for 2nd Level Domains i.e. .co.za.
Verisign is the Registry that authorises both.com and .net TLDs, Maru Telecoms uses the services of the first South African Registrar to be accredited by Verisign, Public Interest Registry (PIR) and Affilias.
Public Interest Registry (PIR), who are the responsible authority for TLD .org domains, and Affilias is the registry for .info gTLDs (Generic Top Level Domains).
